Publications Upcoming PresentaionsWelcome to the LOC/ID Split page of Lancaster University. Infact LOC/ID Split stands for Location Identity Split. This is a very hot area in the research community and Lancaster University wants to contribute in it focusing mainly in the Mobility Area
The Research is revolving around the 8+8/GSE idea of Mike O'Dell and using the "idea" of splitting the 128-bit IPv6 address into two parts, the higher 64 bits as Locator and lower 64 bits as Identifier, to achieve seamless connectivity while being mobile.
Why do we want to split the IPv6 address into two parts? It is due to the overloaded semantic of the IP address. IP address identifies a location on the network topology and is also used to identify the host. Because of the dual roles of the IP address, it makes it less efficient in handling mobility. Having this separation, the Locator will be used for Global Routing and the Identifier will be used to unquiely identify a host. To achieve it, a New Layer in the TCP/IP stack might be needed so as to handle the binding between the Location and Identifier within the stack, but it is still under investigation. Besides, having this separation will not only help in terms of Mobility, but will also aid in terms of Routing Scalability, Multihoming and Traffic Engineering.
topEvaluation of current protocols that achieve Location Identity Split (e.g. LISP, HIP, LIN6, Six/One), mainly for support for mobility.
Investigation of the New Layer in order to achieve mobility and components that may be needed to achieve it. Such component is a Mapping Infrastructure which will provide the association between the Identifier and Location.
Other activities that we are also paying attention are Multihoming, Security, Dynamic DNS and IP Paging in the context of LOC/ID Split.
Implementation is being done in Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) and C programming language
